Educational requirements to become a cosmetologist do vary by state, however every state does require a cosmetologist to have a valid license which is obtained by graduating from an accredited cosmetology school. An apprenticeship may be substituted for graduation but do be prepared to prove your knowledge and skills in cosmetology by passing an exam.

They typical cosmetology training program lasts from 9 months to one year and students are taught hair cutting and styling, chemical services such as perms, hair color preparation and application as well as facials, massages, eyebrow shaping, manicures, pedicures and acrylic nails application.

Some cosmetology courses may also include training in hair and scalp analysis and scalp disorders as well as further education on color application techniques, principles of hair design, hair removal, chemistry and safety for nail enhancement, massage techniques, safe work practices and cosmetology law. Many courses also provide instruction on salon management.

Cosmetology Career - Employment

Once you have completed cosmetology school and have acquired your license your next goal would be to find employment. Of these numbers, 44% are self employed while the rest work for establishments such as beauty salons and spas.

These trends will vary among different occupations in cosmetology with hairdressing and hairstylists coming out at the top, expected to increase by 20%.

Job prospects are considered to be quite good, especially for licensed, entry-level positions. However, it is said that for higher end and higher paying salons, competition will be tougher as these positions are relatively few and those with previous experience and whom are licensed to provide a broad range of services have a better chance at obtaining these positions.

Save time and energy by following a few simple steps to get a quick and simple blow out using your hair dryer. Of course, I recommend a professional hair dryer as not only will you achieve better results in the end but they are also designed to dry hair faster.

After washing your hair, remove excess water by dabbing hair with a towel. Do not rub hair as this can cause frizz and damage to your hair.
Apply a heat protectant thoroughly to damp hair.
Divide hair into four sections - two on the sides at the top, two on the sides at the bottom.
Starting with the bottom layers, use a large round brush and hold under the roots of your hair and aim your hair dryer downwards onto the section.
Slowly move the brush down the section of hair, follow with your hair dryer.
Continue this on the bottom sections of hair and then work on the top sections.
When hair is completely dry flip your head over and blow dry using the cool temperature setting. This helps to tame frizz, smooth and set the hair. If hair feels cold it may not be completely dry. Turn the heat back on and go over hair for a few more minutes and then repeat with the cool setting.

If you have curly hair you know how hard it can be to manage and that curly hair requires special care to keep it looking its best. Well, I don't know about you, but where I am, summer seems to be running late! It's raining, it's cold and I want the sunshine!!

One thing I love about summer is how my hair seems to glisten in the sun, multi faceted shades of auburn and strawberry blond. However, I find as I get older, and wiser, I worry about the damaging effects the sun has not only on my fair skin, but on my hair as well. My New Hair Straightener!

Ok, I told you I had to have one in Pink, so of course, after reading tons of great hair iron review I went ahead and bought the New Karmin Envy Hair Straightener!

Wow!!! I cannot believe this hair iron! My hair has never looked so great, and it's soooo soft and shiny! It heats up in about 10 seconds and I have my entire head done in about 15 minutes. Considering my hair is long, thick, super frizzy and curly, this is really amazing!

I plan to take some before and afters to post here, it's just that I just got it today and well, wasn't exactly 'photo ready' haha!! Oh, and the Shipping was super fast too!

Super Shiny Hair!

I just recently decided to try a drug store brand of Shampoo and Conditioner that my girlfriend recommended and I have to say, I wasn't too disappointed! It's called Moisture Gloss and is by Marc Anthony.

I find it does add extra shine and leaves my hair soft to the touch. The only thing it doesn't do that I like my conditioner to do is fight frizz.

If I leave my hair to dry naturally I use Sunsilk's Hydra TLC 24/7 Creme, it fights the frizz and leaves my hair looking natural, soft and shiny.

I usually use my professional hair straightener, and when I do, my favorite product which adds incredible shine is Sexy Hair Concepts Smooth and Seal Spray. This spray leaves my hair super shiny and it works to fight frizz and humidity.
